Peak Fall Colors in Southern Michigan

It is not quite peak Fall colors in Southern Michigan, but it is definitely prime viewing weather. With temperatures expected to be in the 70s and 80s through October 12, now is a great time to getaway to Southern Michigan.
Jonesville is a vibrant community with great restaurants just a couple of blocks from the Munro House B&B. Fine dining, casual dining, and fast food restaurants are all an easy walk away. Carl Fast Park in the town square is a fine example of the vibrant colors that are turning right now. Local favorite color tours include the farmlands of Hillsdale County, the Coldwater lakes area, and the Irish Hills near Brooklyn. All have a variety of color and terrain.

Any day can be a good day to play hookie or take a quick getaway to enjoy the final nice days before Winter. I have the opportunity to play hookie and ride my motorcycle around the area to enjoy the day, have a nice meal, and spend quality time with the one I love. I am lucky to have a schedule that allows time to do these things that I enjoy. Many people need to make time to enjoy life in Michigan.

Murder Mystery Dinner at Munro House

November is our Michigan Murder Mystery Month and another successful Murder Mystery night occurred over the weekend. 11 guests, mostly from the Detroit area, took the 100 mile drive to the Munro House in Jonesville to spend an evening of adult activity in this small Southern Michigan town. Fun, frivolity, and a feast were provided to like-minded people for an in-house getaway weekend.
Our guests were age 24 and up. The younger crowd was a little leery of what to expect. They had never been to a bed and breakfast before and had never taken part in a murder mystery. Upon meeting the older crowd, they all melded and spent the evening enjoying each others' company while laughing, eating, and trying to figure out who-done-it.
It quickly became evident that our games are not too serious. We bring people together and put them in a setting where they can have fun with other adults without the pressure of actually having to figure out the crime.  We started out with an appetizer of shrimp cocktail accompanied by a nice variety of Michigan wines. This night's selection were from St. Julian's and Leelanau Cellars. The beauty of hosting a murder mystery at a bed and breakfast is that everyone can have as good a time as they want to have and no one has to worry about driving home--because everyone is spending the night.

Our award winning harvest soup was followed by our house salad--the secret ingredient is caramelized blanched almonds.  A beef tenderloin was accompanied by roasted potatoes, and our peppers and beans vegetable mix. The interactive game was played while dinner was served and consumed.
Lori's butter cream frosting coated the devil's food cake. Dessert was served while the guests discussed clues that accused just about everyone at the table for having done the deed. In the end, it was not about figuring it out, it was about acting silly, wearing funny hats, and spending time with new friends.

New Years Eve Ideas in Michigan

New Years Day
New Years Day becomes a getaway night when it falls on a weekend.  In 2010, New Years Eve falls on a Friday, so New Years Day is a Saturday, making it a great weekend for 2 nights of winter festivities.
At the Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville, we are celebrating with our 12th annual Murder Mystery Dinner on New Years Eve and the original Chef Night Cooking Party on New Years Day.
murder mystery dinner
We have hosted hundreds of Murder Mysteries since the 90's. We have thrown away the boxed games and have found a variety of scripted games for various sized groups. After taking the games for a test run, we only play the ones that are fun. There must be interesting characters, amusing dialogue, and solvable puzzles to be a murder mystery worthy of playing at our house. Our murder mystery dinner party lasts about 3 hours.
Chef Night is a cooking party that we have developed that incorporates interesting recipes, a mixture of flavors, a bit of instruction, and serious interaction between amateur chefs.  Several two person teams prepare portions of an atypical meal of diverse flavors using recipes from around the world which are consumed by all participants in a fun and cooperative atmosphere. There is about 6 hours of preparation and consumption in this interactive cooking party.
This two night New Years Eve package is a great way to say "goodbye" to 2010 and "hello" to 2011.

Peak Season for Fall Colors in Michigan

It is a sure sign of Fall colors peak season in Michigan when the Black Walnut trees lose all of their leaves.  There are several black walnut trees in my yard at the Munro House B&B in Jonesville Michigan.  I picked the last big bunch of walnuts last week and waited for the remainder to fall.  There were heavy winds overnight with a bit of rain which led to bare trees this morning. As the pictures show, there are bare walnut trees out front, maple trees in the foreground have just begun to turn color, and brightly colors of yellow, orange, and red leaves in the background.
Fall is my favorite time of year. I love a bright sunshiny day, brisk air, and a long slow ride on my motorcycle.  Lori and I have taken many fall color tours in Southern Michigan during the past month with no destination in mind. Our goal was to just get out and enjoy the day. Country roads flanked by harvested fields and the myriad of colors of the tree lines and forests made for a very pleasureable ride.  We always ended up at a small town bar or restaurant to seek out another awesome cheeseburger.  The vast majority of burgers we have found, in the most unlikely of places, ranked from very good to awesome on our taste chart.
With peak fall color season in Michigan upon us, the viewing days are now limited.  The wonderful scenery will only decline with the temperature.  We are still expecting at least 2 more weeks of enjoyable Fall colors in Southern Michigan.  With Jonesville having not yet experienced a frost, the colors could extend into mid-November. Any day is still a good day to getaway for a Fall colors package.

Fall Colors in Southern Michigan

Michigan fall colors are turning and the weather has been absolutely perfect for about a week straight.  Bright sunshine and warm temperatures are combining for the best time to enjoy Fall Colors in Southern Michigan. The leaves are fast approaching peak color, the fields are being harvested, and right now is a great time to be riding the country roads of Southern Michigan..
I have been enjoying Southern Michigan motorcycle tours on my GoldWing almost every day to take advantage of the beauty of Hillsdale, Branch, Lenawae, Eaton, and Jackson County.  Pumpkin patches are full, farm machinery are harvesting crops, and the Amish are doing it the old fashioned way--with big draft horses.
The roads I like to ride include highway 12 through the Irish Hills. Its big curves and hills at highway speeds are fun to ride on a motorcycle. Litchfield Road on either side of Litchfield has views that change from forests to grain fields and back again.  Fremont Road from Quincy to the Indiana State line has it all--farms, forests, fields, and the flowage of many lakes.  These features combine for an outstanding scenic ride.
In an era of mega farms, there are still many smaller operations throughout Southern Michigan. Some of them are family farms, many of them are Amish farms. It is easy to spot an Amish farm. Clue #1 is a 2 story white farm house with no window shutters. Clue #2 is the absence of power lines, as the Amish in Southern Michigan reject the use of telephones and electricity. Clue #3 is the absence of tractors and other farm machinery and the presence of large draft horses.
We are expecting peak colors in Michigan to last through October and possible into early November.  In the recent past, Fall colors have been enjoyable as late as mid November.  However, the Fall color season typically ends about the first weekend in November. Now is the time to enjoy a Southern Michigan Fall Getaway.

Spring Break in Michigan

Now that winter is over, people are antsy for a getaway.  Some want to go South to Florida or West to Arizona.  Some want beach, some want heat.  Everyone wants a change of scenery.  But not everyone has the time. That's when a getaway to Jonesville, Michigan, may fit perfectly.

When time is the biggest obstacle, a getaway location within 2 hours of home is a very good option. There may not be beach or heat, but there is a change of scenery and a relaxed pace nearby.  Family owned restaurants dominate the area and onsite spa professionals are available most every day.
Jonesville is located in South Central Michigan near Jackson.  The central location is within 2 hours of Detroit, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Toledo, South Bend, and Fort Wayne.  Choosing Jonesville means that most of the getaway will be spent relaxing and less of the getway will be spent driving. Folks with just a couple of days or a weekend will find Jonesville a convenient location for their short trip.

The Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville, Michigan, is a leader in innovative getaway packages in the Michigan B&B industry.  Most packages include dinners and massages, along with 2 nights bed and breakfast.  Flowers, chocolates, movie tickets, and other spa services can be added to create a unique package for any occassion.
The staff consistantly gets high marks for the quality of the service.  Some of that is due to the amount of time that is spent on the table receiving the service.  At the Munro House, a one hour massage means one hour of massage on the table.  At most salons, an hour of massage means 5 minutes of consultation, 5 minutes to disrobe, 45 minutes on the table, and 5 minutes to get dressed.  That's right, at many spas, a one hour massage lasts just 45 minutes.  At the Munro House, one hour of massage means 60 minutes of massage.

Local favorite restaurants take good care of guests from the Munro House.  The food is plentiful and consistanly very good.  The service is friendly and consistantly very good.
Additional items can be added to make the occassion special.  Chocolates, roses, and movie tickets can be added for romance.  Manicures, pedicures, facials, or body wraps can be added for relaxation.

Valentine's Day in Michigan

Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville Michigan is celebrating Valentine's Day the entire month of February.  We have developed several packages for 1 and 2 nights, with romance in mind.  The packages can include chocolates, roses, dinners, massages, and movies.

Valentine's Day, 2010, falls on a Sunday.  Most romantics like to get away on the actual holiday, February 14.  Unfortunately, most people have to work on Monday, February 15, so an overnight stay on Valentine's Day is not an option for everyone.  However, some people will have Monday off of work if their company celebrates President's Day which falls on Monday, February 15, this year. They will be able to take in an overnight stay on Sunday night and not have to worry about going to work on Monday.

With our busy schedules, everyone's getaway plan is different and the opportunity to get away does not necessarily correspond with specific weekends or holidays. So if you are looking for a romance package at a bed and breakfast in Michigan, the Munro House B&B offers a selection of romantic ideas for your getaway on any day of the week--especially during the month of February.

Winter Getaway in Michigan

Christmas is over, New Years has been celebrated, and the next holiday on the calendar is Valentine's Day. But is a winter holiday necessary to take a weekend getaway in Michigan?  Some people call it cabin fever when there is a desire to get out of town for a few days in January and February. The cure for this ailment could be a weekend getaway to an interesting bed and breakfast in a small South Central Michigan town.  I'm talking about my town, Jonesville.

Jonesville is located at highways 12 & 99 about 20 miles North of the Ohio, Indiana, Michigan border. Toledo, Battle Creek, and Kalamazoo are all about an hour away. Detroit and Fort Wayne are about an hour and a half from here.  Chicago, Cleveland, and Indianapolis are a 3 hour drive. Near or far, we try to provide a great experience with a reasonable drive time.

Here, at the Munro House, we offer onsite spa services 7 days a week. We have professionals who can provide a manicure, pedicure, facial, massage, body wrap, and waxing services. A day at the spa or just an hour of massage can provide a great cold weather pick-me-up or alternative to just sitting home.

A wide variety of eateries are available from fast food to fine dining to what US Today once claimed was the best hamburger in the world at Ray's in Reading.

The pace is slower around here. Traffic jams are virtually non-existant, the food is good, and there is a lot of antique shopping within 10 minutes. Allen is the "Antique Capital of Michigan" and is just 5 miles away on highway 12. Several antique malls boast a total of over 1,000 dealers who display their treasures in a climate-controlled atmosphere. Dishes, tools, signs, toys, books, and lots of memories can be found here. The inventory is constantly changing so  there will always be a new selection of goods to peruse and reminisce about with you family, friends, or mate.  I am partial to the big red barn know as the Allen Antique Barn, but there is a big selection at Allen Antique Mall, Capital Antiques, and Hog Creek Antique Mall.

For those who just want to sit back, relax, and enjoy their mate, we've got rooms with big double Jacuzzi tubs, rooms with fireplaces, and musical instruments that include a baby grand piano, accoustic guitar, mandolin, and ukele that our guests are welcome to use.  Our movie collection has hundreds of titles and Blockbuster is just a couple minutes away for our movie lovers.

Of course, I'm going to bake cookies and have soft drinks available all of the time.  We also make a big breakfast 7 days a week.  We are famous for Lori's Secret Recipe Belgian Waffles, but we offer other things for breakfast, too.  A big bowl of fresh cut fruit along with coffee and juice is offered every morning.

If a getaway to Southern Michigan is what you are looking for, we are open 7 days a week through all seasons and will be happy to accommodate your needs.  Find out for yourself why "life is good in Jonesville."

Murder Mysteries in Jonesville Michigan

We have hosted hundreds of murder mystery dinners at the Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville, Michigan. Most of our events are open for couples to join. We need at least 4 couples to play and have always been able to meet the minimum. Some of our events are private for groups of friends. We have hosted families, clubs, and many diverse groups of people.

We have the setup down to a science. We generally use a festive tablecloth with our antique china and adorn the table with candles. We have developed a menu that includes appetizer, soup, salad, entree, and dessert. A typical meal includes shrimp cocktail for the appetizer. We make our favorite seasonal soup. In the Fall, we serve our Harvest Soup for the second course. Our new house salad is spectacular. It includes our home-made dressing, dried cherries, glazed almonds, and Parmesan cheese. The main course is a beef tenderloin steak served with potatoes and vegetables. Lately we have been finishing the evening with our chocolate caramel brownies served with ice cream.

We spend a good part of the afternoon preparing the meal, so a prompt arrival time is imperative. Many of our guests purchase the two night package, so they are already in town. For those guests who buy the one night package, an arrival before 5:00 p.m. is required. The event starts at around 6:30, so we need our guests to have been checked in so that we can finish the prep work, uninterrupted.

The evening starts in the parlor with an introduction of participants and an explanation of how the game is played while the appetizer and beverages are served. We try to get a feeling for the personalities of the guests so that they all will get an appropriate role. Those people with the biggest personalities will get the biggest parts. Additionally, each player gets a hat from our costume closet. We have collected a variety of funky head ware that helps to lighten the mood and transform our peeps into their new roles. That means that there is no pressure for guests to find their own costume for an event at our house. We take care of it, and keep it simple.

The guests then move into the dining room and play the game while the meal is served. Each person has a 3 page script with 4-8 clues on each sheet that they must get into the conversation over dinner. The clues are very interactive and include topics that many participants have comments to insert. In the first act, each person learns a little bit more about their character. In the second act, there is a lot of finger pointing and innuendo. The third act is where everyone has an alibi--some are good, some are not so good.

When all three acts are complete, there is discussion over dessert about who-done-it. One by one the participants are asked who they think did it, and why. Then, one-by-one we tell you who didn't do it, and why. At the end, the clues that incriminate the guilty party are divulged and it becomes obvious who was guilty.
We always host a murder mystery that is open to individual couples on every Saturday night in November and on New Years Eve. Additionally, we hold events on the first weekend in January and on random dates throughout the year. We will host a murder mystery dinner on any available date with at least a group of four and six weeks notice. We will then fill up the table to play with a minimum of 8 total players.
We have even offered murder mystery luncheons for private groups only. It is a lower cost event and is generally done on a Sunday afternoon for private groups only. We need 8 to play with a maximum of 14 players. 12 is the ideal size, but all even numbers between 8 and 14 make for a good game.
We enjoy hosting parties at our house. We have developed our own style and have chosen games that are fun to play. Our goal is to have our guests have a good time whether they figure out the mystery or not. At our house it is more about laughing and having a good time than it is about studying your part and taking notes. The games we play can be figured out if the players pay a reasonalbe amount of attention to the conversation over dinner. On nights when no one does, it doesn't matter. Because this is a game, not a contest, so there is no pressure to win.
If you're looking for some good adult-themed fun with other like-minded couples, a murder mystery may be just the ticket. Check out our website or call 1-800-320-3792 to find out more about an upcoming murder mystery.

Michigan Inn Caters to Romance

When it comes to romance, the Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville, Michigan, has some good ideas for your romantic weekend getaway. The keys are privacy and intimacy.

The privacy part is easy, because Jonesville is in South Central Michigan about an hour due South of Lansing at highways 12 & 99. When many people plan a getaway, they go where the crowd goes--Mackinac, Traverse City, South Haven, and Saugatuck. In my opinion, those locations are more touristy than romantic. You can mix the two, but a true romantic getaway involves the kind of privacy that can be found in a small town, away from the crowds, and away from the kids. Just time together, one-on-one, with your mate.

Intimacy can be achieved when there are few distractions. A small town like Jonesville may fit perfectly, as there are no amusement parks, tourist traps, or long lines. There are things to do and excellent restaurants at a slower pace. This small town Michigan inn caters to romance and can give you suggestions and make all the arrangements for a wonderful getaway with just one phone call.

A sample weekend itinerary includes:

FRIDAY

  • 3-6 pm -- Check-in and tour of our historic home
  • 7 pm -- Casual dinner for 2 at Johnny T's Bistro
  • 9 pm -- Video movie and relaxing Jacuzzi tub for 2 in your room

SATURDAY

SUNDAY

  • 8:30-9:30 -- Enjoy our country style breakfast
  • 11 am -- Check out and farewells

OPTIONS

  • Dozen Roses Floral Arrangement - nothing says "I Love You" better than roses
  • Chocolate Truffles - Indulgent, sexy, romantic
  • Spa Services - Manicure, Pedicure, Facial - Pamper her, and guys like it, too!
  • Golf - Spend time outside on a beautiful local course

We organize a lot of getaway packages at the Munro House. You can pick from our list of packages or we can create something special, just for you, on any day of the week--with several price tiers. A wonderful romantic getaway is just a phone call and 15 minutes away.

Romantic Bed & Breakfast in Michigan Knows Romance

What is romance? What is romantic? These terms mean different things to different people. For some people, romance is dinner, flowers, and a night at home alone. For other people romance is quiet time, away from the kids, far from home with the one you love. A romantic getaway could be one-on-one time with your lover on the golf course, in a restaurant, or in a nice room in a small town inn.

Any combination of these things can be a romantic getaway. The Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville Michigan has many getaway packages that are romantic. Our most popular one is simply called the Romantic Getaway Package and includes flowers, chocolates, dinners, massages, and two nights bed and breakfast.

The romantic getaway starts with a choice of rooms. Choices may include a room with a fireplace or double Jacuzzi tub. Couples away for romance enjoy the flicker of the fire as a backdrop. The double Jacuzzi tubs are a prelude to love. Our in-room tubs are made for 2. Our "magic potion" fills the tub with bubbles when the jets are engaged. After the room is chosen, the rest of the planning is in our hands.

Upon arrival, an itinerary is provided along with a selection of decadent chocolate truffles and a dozen roses floral arrangement in a glass vase. Dinner reservations are made for that evening at 1 of our favorite local restaurants. Breakfast is always included with an overnight stay. On the second day, a one hour massage is scheduled in a private room in our house. After a one hour rubdown, a dip in the tub and/or a nap is typical behavior after our massage therapists put you into a fine state of relaxation. The rest of the afternoon is yours to spend any way you like--at the movies, at the antique malls, at the ice cream parlor, or the fun park. A second dinner reservation is made at another of our favorite local restaurants and breakfast is served the following morning.

The Chicago Water Grill is our favorite restaurant and always our top choice for guests to enjoy. It just happens to be just 2 blocks away--a short walk--and has food selections that are consistantly very good and service that is consistantly very good. With choices that include steaks, seafood, chicken, and pasta, there is a nice selection of food for a fine dining experience.

These are the top 10 popular romantic things to do in Jonesville, Michigan

10. Golfing
09. Ice Cream
08. Antique Shopping
07. Chocolates
06. Roses
05. Fireplace
04. Double Jacuzzi Tub
03. Massages
02. Dinner
01. Bed and Breakfast

We can arrange for a getaway package that includes all or some of the top things to add some romance into your weekend getaway.
