Centrally located in Southern Michigan between Detroit and Kalamazoo, the Munro House is an option to driving all the way to Lake Michigan or the Mackinac Bridge for a Winter getaway.

New Years Eve Party in Michigan

It is New Years Eve. We are hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner Party at the Munro House in Jonesville, and it's 41 degrees outside. That is just too nice a day to not be able to enjoy because of work, so I took 30 minutes and rode my motorcycle around town. I got a snapshot of me in front of the time and temperature at the bank, in front of the Jonesville Water Tower, at the local gas station, and in the Wal-Mart parking lot. So this is my time capsule of what it was like on this day. The price of gas was reasonable, my town was progressive, the parking lots were full, and the weather was outstanding (for December). Now I've got a house full of nice people and everyone is having a good time. Lady Gaga will be on the countdown from Times Square. We'll pour champagne at midnight and I will have to work on day 1 of 2012. It is all good.  Life is good in Jonesville.

12' Christmas Tree Lights

It is a big job to light the Christmas Tree at the Munro House B&B in Jonesville MI. The tree is 12 feet tall and requires 30 strings of lights to properly illuminate it. With 100 lights on a string, that is 3,000 lights on this 12 foot tree. Another 3,000 ornaments will be hung from the branches. A spectacular indoor Christmas Tree that rivals the kind that are seen on Soap Operas will be gracing the parlor of this great old house.
I enlisted the help of friends and we completed the assembly and lighting task in just a couple of hours. Complete decorating of this Christmas Mansion will be done by the end of the week. Christmas Getaways in Michigan can be enjoyed 7 days a week through early January.

Presidents Day Weekend Special

Presidents Day is a holiday that is celebrated on Monday February 21 in 2011. Presidents Day is one of those holidays that some organizations give their employees a holiday to create a 3 day weekend to celebrate 2 of our greatest Presidents--George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. But to many laborers, it's just another Monday.

The Munro House is a Bed and Breakfast in Southern Michigan that is offering a special deal on Presidents Day weekend for people who have the day off. Guests who are able to make it a long getaway weekend can get a room on Sunday February 20 for as low as $49 when they also stay Saturday night. As an option, any 2 night getaway package is available for $100 off when it includes Sunday night.

With a staff of on-call cosmetologists and masseuses, spa services and massages are available any day of the week, including Sunday. A good selection of restaurants in the area leaves plenty of choices for lunches and dinners. Winter getaway packages have many options for romance or a belated Valentines Day gift.

The Munro House has a connection to the Underground Railroad that can make this an educational opportunity as well as a getaway during Black History Month. The remains of a tunnel and a secret room that was used to hide runaway slaves in the years preceding the Civil War are great subjects of interest to historians and people tracing their roots.

Michigan Day Spa and Massage for the holidays

It has been a very good month for a spa getaway in Michigan. It seems like almost all of our guests at the Munro House Bed and Breakfast and Spa have been in need of a massage. Endless shopping, year end business stress, and planning family get-togethers take their toll on many people's bodies.  Our highly experienced staff has been here to alleviate stress, sooth tension, and relax muscles in an unlikely spa haven surprisingly close to home.

Munro House is located at highways 12 and 99 in South Central Michigan just an hour from Lansing, Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, and Toledo; and just 90 minutes from Detroit, Kalamazoo, and Fort Wayne. It is not necessary to spend a lot of time driving to the far reaches of Michigan to enjoy a winter getaway when a short trip to Jonesville can refresh and rejuvenate singles or couples in need.

Our trained professionals have the time, patience, and knowledge to make your Michigan spa experience a good one by being attentive to your time and your needs. Massages at the Munro House last a minimum of one hour on the table. Many spas have a schedule to keep and need to turn over the table every hour on the hour. In these places, an hour massage includes time to undress, consult, and dress--that leaves only 50 minutes or less for your service on the table.  Relaxation is the key at the Munro House. 60 minutes is the minimum time our guests spend getting a massage. Testimonials from thousands of guests regularly include the same themes--amazing massage, personable knowledgeable staff, and total relaxation.

Something to Do on New Years Day in Michigan

New Years Day 2010 will be a better getaway holiday this year because it falls on a weekend.  Most everyone does something special for New Years Eve, but they just stay home on New Years Day to watch college football bowl games.  With New Years Day occurring on a Saturday, for a change, it is an ideal day for a winter getaway and do something different, interesting, and fun with your friend or lover.

Chef Night is an interactive cooking party being held on New Years Day at the Munro House in Jonesville, Michigan.  The kitchen will be open at 3:30, so all guests must arrive by 3:00.  Reservations are required. The event lasts about 6 hours and nobody has to drive home because everyone is spending the night.

In our busy lives, there is seldom time to prepare a 3 course meal for our own families. On Chef Night, regular people help to prepare a 7 course feast for themselves and other guests (up to 14!) with helpful instructions available from the hostess.  This year's theme is "international". Food from across the country and around the world will be prepared by 2 person teams of amateur chefs. Favorite and familiar dishes will be served along with tempting and exotic selections that are just not available on many menus in any restaurant. Past favorites and new selections from several continents will be produced on the first day of the year.

Many guests have chose to dress-up in a theme from the country of their choice. We've seen togas, lederhosen, leis, and more.  With Austin Powers being the International Man of Mystery, and this being an international food menu, 60's fashion is the suggested dress-up theme.  Some guests find it more festive to create a "look" for the day, and some people create a new look just by putting on an apron.

The 6 hour interactive cooking and eating food party costs $299 per couple and includes bed and breakfast.  It's a one night package with limited availability. Mention this blog post and give us the secret word "YEAH BABY, YEAH" to get a voucher for 10% off of this one night package only. 7 days notice required.

First Snow of the Season 2010

Munro House Jonesville Michigan Winter 2010
The first snow of Winter 2010 in Jonesville, Michigan, fell on Thursday, December 3.  The weather man reported one inch of snow with 4 more expected.  The additional snow didn't come.

The house remains warm through the baseboard hot water heat system. With most of the 10 heating zones set to 72 degrees, the oldest house in Hillsdale County stays comfortable all Winter.  With 7 of 12 fireplaces converted to gas, most rooms can get toasty warm in very short order.  The big double Jacuzzi tubs with individual hot water heaters provide a soaking experience to warm up anyone who has been "chilled to the bone".

Extreme Christmas decorating has begun in the parlor.  The Nativity set and the Christmas scenes flank the 12 foot Christmas tree adorned with about 3,000 lights and 3,000 gold ornaments.

The parlor is the gathering place for all sizes of groups that choose to have their Winter Getaway or Christmas Party in Jonesville. Whether it's a reception for 60 people or just a couple's getaway, the Munro House feels like home and people feel comfortable here, regardless of the weather.

New Years Eve Ideas in Michigan

New Years Day
New Years Day becomes a getaway night when it falls on a weekend.  In 2010, New Years Eve falls on a Friday, so New Years Day is a Saturday, making it a great weekend for 2 nights of winter festivities.
At the Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville, we are celebrating with our 12th annual Murder Mystery Dinner on New Years Eve and the original Chef Night Cooking Party on New Years Day.
murder mystery dinner
We have hosted hundreds of Murder Mysteries since the 90's. We have thrown away the boxed games and have found a variety of scripted games for various sized groups. After taking the games for a test run, we only play the ones that are fun. There must be interesting characters, amusing dialogue, and solvable puzzles to be a murder mystery worthy of playing at our house. Our murder mystery dinner party lasts about 3 hours.
Chef Night is a cooking party that we have developed that incorporates interesting recipes, a mixture of flavors, a bit of instruction, and serious interaction between amateur chefs.  Several two person teams prepare portions of an atypical meal of diverse flavors using recipes from around the world which are consumed by all participants in a fun and cooperative atmosphere. There is about 6 hours of preparation and consumption in this interactive cooking party.
This two night New Years Eve package is a great way to say "goodbye" to 2010 and "hello" to 2011.

4th of July Discount on B&B Lodging

Every Michigan Bed and Breakfast has its high season and low season. These are times in which there is either a big demand for lodging or a small demand. Inns on the water can command a higher than normal daily rate due to supply and demand and location. The 4th of July weekend is a prime example where many bed and breakfasts have a higher than normal demand. During this time frame, many B&Bs will get top dollar for their rooms and can require guests to stay 2, or 3, or 4 nights, or more.

However, not every inn is near water, or an attraction, or a special event. At these locations, a special deal may be available for travelers who want an affordable getaway on a holiday weekend. The Munro House in Jonesville is a prime example.

The Munro House has discount pricing for guests staying any 2 nights from July 1-5. They call it the "Proud to Be An American" promotion where Americans are honored by getting a great deal on any room during the Independence Day holiday weekend. $99 a night for bed and breakfast is a significant discount for any of their rooms.

Coming to a small town during a holiday means that there will be more peace and quiet than crowds and activity. Premiere Theater shows new release movies on 7 screens in Hillsdale. There is a parade plus activities and fireworks at the Hillsdale County Fairgrounds. Spa services including manicure, pedicure, facial, massage, body wraps, and waxing are available onsite every day at the Munro House to create a relaxing getaway over the Fourth of July holiday.
Whether you need a couples getaway or are visiting family and friends in the area or just need some quiet time, the Munro House is a good choice for escaping the crowds that congregate near beaches and amusement parks and casinos in Michigan.

Family Christmas Dinner at a Michigan B&B

Several families have made our house their home for the holidays. They may not have as much room, or may require a more central location, or they might prefer to enjoy the day as opposed to doing all the cooking and cleaning themselves. Hosting the party and doing all the setup and cleanup is what we are all about at the Munro House Bed & Breakfast in Jonesville, Michigan. We had 3 Christmas trees this year and have our parlor and dining room fully decorated for the season.  Christmas dinners are very popular, but family get-togethers are welcome year round for birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebrations.

The McCuens have been with us for 6 Christmases. We have watched their kids grow up and have enjoyed the new additions to the family. They are as much a part of the Munro House Christmas as we are part of the McCuen Christmas.

Selecting to spend the holiday at a Michigan bed and breakfast was a choice they made years ago.  We do everything we can to make sure they are comfortable and well fed.

Christmas Decorating

We tend to go to extremes during the Christmas season at the Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville, Michigan. About a third of our basement is reserved for Christmas decorations and it usually takes 3-4 weeks to fully decorate the house. Our goal is to be finished by Thanksgiving, but this year I fell behind and was nowhere near finished on turkey day.

I had already spent 2 days putting up the 12 foot tree in the parlor. It has about 3,000 lights and over 1,500 ornaments. I had also spent a bunch of time setting up our 40 piece Nativity, the Christmas Moose Family, the Christmas Ducks, the Christmas Bears, and some Santa Clauses. Thanksgiving was behind us and I had had enough decorating.

A family from Arizona was in for the weekend and they had a little time to kill and offered to decorate. Of course I said yes. Many busy hands had two trees completely done in just a few hours. For me, this would have been a chore. For them, it was fun.

We have now completed our soap opera tree (done up in solid gold), the original Frosty the Snowman Tree, and our family tree which chronicles our travels, achievements, and experiences. Each is a work of art in itself.
Our inn is decorated for Christmas. We look forward to hosting a lot of couples looking for a holiday getaway, small groups that want us to host their private party, and families who want to enjoy our ambiance and hospitality.
