Olivia's Chop House at 205 E Chicago Street in Jonesville, MI (517) 849-3663 is the number one choice for a great meal in town. It is an easy 2 block walk from my house to fine dining in a casual atmosphere. Their prime rib is a house favorite. When it's gone, it's gone for the night and the choices become difficult, as there are so many other excellent selections at reasonable prices.

The red snapper has become my favorite seafood dish. Expertly grilled with pearl onions, carrots, and bacon in a wine reduction. The chicken saltimbocca translates to "chicken that melts in your mouth", and it does. I've never seen a bigger piece of poultry than their pecan encrusted chicken.

Everyone would love to have a good restaurant nearby. I have a great restaurant just 2 blocks away. We patronize them often because every town needs to support local businesses, especially when the pricing, quality, product, and service are all exceptional.

Rosalie's Roadhouse Restaurant in Jonesville MI

Rosalie's Roadhouse Restaurant and Bar is located on the West side of Jonesville on Highway 12. It is a casual and fun place to eat lunch or dinner. The old house has been converted into a fine eatery with excellent sandwiches, pizza, and some of the best lasagna I've ever had. The food gets served on a pie tin in a room decorated with automobile memorabilia. Vintage license plates dominate the walls and ceiling of the bar area. The food is excellent and the prices are reasonable.

Rick Santorum Symposium at Hillsdale College Cancelled

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum has cancelled tonight's symposium at Hillsdale College. So if you want to see him this evening, he'll be appearing in Grand Rapids instead. With the Michigan primary election coming on February 28, the college is hopeful that the symposium will be rescheduled.

Presidential Candidate Visiting Hillsdale College

2012 Republican Presidential candidate, Rick Santorum will be visiting Hillsdale College on Monday, February 2o. An 8:00 p.m. symposium will be held at the Jesse Phillips Arena. Space is limited, so an RSVP to PresCandidateSymposium@Hillsdale.edu is required.

Herman Cain visited Hillsdale earlier this Winter during severe weather that did not deter over 1,000 attendees. Expected mild weather should allow the arena to be filled to capacity.

Munro House is just 7 1/2 minutes from campus and had limited overnight lodging available as of this posting.

Wing Night at Caffe Azzurri in Hillsdale MI

The deal is just too good to pass up. $0.15 wings and $1.50 bottled beers in February at the Caffe Azzurri in Hillsdale Michigan. It has become a Saturday night tradition for us. The restaurant is on the grounds of the Country Club in Hillsdale and is open to the public. It is worth the drive down the winding road that leads to the eatery on the shore of Lake Baw Beese, just South of Hillsdale.

Cats Collection Painted Pottery

Our house is becoming an art gallery. Lori has never taken an art class but has been finding inspiration to paint cats. Her objective is to paint 40 pieces for an 8 place setting for our son's new family. The plan is to mismatch the pieces but keep a common theme--cats. She began painting pottery for fun at the Toasted Mud Studio in Hillsdale MI last Fall and found an inner artist that she did not know existed. She started painting Picasso style cats. That motif is morphing into an array of faces, poses, and veins. This project will take a lot of time. She is motivated to paint a little bit every day and hopes to complete the set in less than a year

Unusual Wedding Cake for Valentine's Day

Many lovers exchange chocolates on Valentine's Day. Some prefer a healthier choice and dip strawberries in their chocolate. When guests ask for a special wedding cake as a part of our $1,000 wedding package, we do our best to get the cake they desire. Todd & Robin wanted a wedding cake that was enveloped in Hershey Bars with chocolate covered strawberries instead of frosting. We went to our cake boss and made their wish come true. This cake was a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. It is all part of what the Munro House will do for you as a part of your thousand dollar wedding package.

Sauk Theater Announces 2012 Season in Jonesville MI

The Hillsdale Community Theater's live stage season at the Sauk Theater in Jonesville has been announced. The 2012 theme is a Season of Discovery. Musicals and dramas are on this year's schedule with local talent performing live on stage.

Discovering Identity, August 2-12, the 2004 Broadway musical - "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee".

Crimson Cottage Bed and Breakfast Holland MI

I attended a business meeting at a Bed and Breakfast in Holland Michigan. The Crimson Cottage Inn the Woods B&B is located on the North West side of Holland, near Lake Michigan. Four of us overnighted for a day and a half of meetings in a very comfortable home.  I was expecting a red house, but arrived to a yellow home with a red roof and a red door. Inside, the crimson colors were everywhere. Our small group met around a fireplace and were treated with snacks and beverages that kept our energy up until supper time. Conversation went late into the evening. I retired to my beautifully decorated room and enjoyed the free wireless internet while watching cable TV.  We awoke to a splendid buffet breakfast. The remaining half-day of meetings went quickly and left us with a pleasant memory of our hosts and the meeting space in a wonderful home.

MI Underground Railroad Connection Mentioned in Huffington Post

The Huffington Post mentioned several American B&B's connection to the Underground Railroad. The Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Michigan was featured as a publicly accessible location that contains lore from the American Pre-Civil War era. Munro House still has a secret room and the remains of a stone walled tunnel--both large enough to comfortably enter or view. Overnight guests are treated to the many stories about the history of the house. Tours for small and large groups are available by appointment.

Michigan Underground Railroad Tour

It is alleged that the Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville Michigan was a Station on the Underground Railroad. There is no written documentation--as it was an illegal activity--but local legend insists that the stories are true. Runaway slaves from the South would funnel through Michigan to get to the furthest Southern point of Canada which is near Detroit. The Sauk Trail was a well travelled path that led across Southern Michigan to Detroit. Jonesville is situated in the middle of the state along the trail. Munro House has a portion of what is left of a 200 foot long tunnel, along with a pair of secret rooms that are only accessible through a panel in the first floor ceiling. The evidence points to the distinct possibility that the legend is fact.

February is Black History Month. The local elementary school traditionally sends all of its 4th grade students to tour Munro House. We give a great tour and talk about the Underground Railroad, the history of Jonesville, and life in the mid 1800's. We like to split the classes into groups of about 20 students and schedule them throughout the month--we only charge $1 per person. Individuals and small groups can also take the tour for $5 per person. All tours are by appointment only and can be scheduled at any time.
