Using Facebook to Check-In

I have been trying to make it a habit to use the check-in feature on facebook when we are out and about. It is good networking for the places I like to patronize, and we have found that some of these places have instant offers when you check-in with facebook.

All of our guests arrived early so we took my Honda GoldWing motorcycle for a ride on a beautiful Monday night hoping to have dinner at a lakeside restaurant. We drove about 60 miles and found every place that looked interesting was closed. We knew that Johnny T's Bistro in Hillsdale was open on Mondays so we headed back home to enjoy a great meal at the best local restaurant that is open on Monday nights.

I used my smart phone to go to facebook and check-in. I did, and got a message that friends who check-in at Johnny T's this month, get 1 entree free when they buy 1. All we had to do was show the phone's screen message to the wait staff. Lori went with their pot roast sandwich, I chose the day's special, herder's pie. Both were excellent and one was free because we checked-in.

Moving in to Hillsdale College

Incoming Freshman at Hillsdale College get a lot of support from their parents when they first move into their dorms. For most families, this is the first time the child has moved out of the family home on a semi-permanent basis. The parents load up the truck, van, or U-haul and head to a small city in Southern Michigan to leave their children at a world famous institution of higher learning. They unpack the vehicle, meet other parents and some faculty. Then they turn around, go home, and hope for the best.

But it's not just about the parents, the student has a lot of adjusting to do, too. They need to get comfortable with their new home, explore the campus, and find friends. Hillsdale College is famous for welcoming new students. They make it their objective to make Hillsdale feel like their new home.

Upper classmen, along with students who have moved in early, help the new students get settled with all of their stuff from home. They try very hard to invoke a sense of family, so the newcomers will fit in quickly and not have time to get homesick. Hillsdale College tries very hard to make this transition as easy as possible.

Many parents of students at Hillsdale College stay at the Munro House B&B in Jonesville for special trips, activities, sports, and events. It's just 7 1/2 minutes from campus and claims to be "the most comfortable lodging in Hillsdale County."

Statue of Liberty in Montgomery MI

We take our Goldwing Motorcycle on  rides down secondary roads at every opportunity to enjoy the scenery and get to know Hillsdale County better. On a recent trip to the small town of Montgomery Michigan, we took a road less travelled and came upon the Statue of Liberty. It was about the size of a real person on an island in a pond near the side of the road.

It was such an unusual site, that we had to stop to get some pictures. This is another one of those gems that we occasionally happen upon that we find interesting and make us smile. It is located on the North side of Poats Road near Wildwood Road just North of Montgomery MI.

Cascarelli's Pizza in Homer MI

We made the 30 minute drive from the Munro House in Jonesville to have lunch at Cascarelli's Pizza in Homer MI. The restaurant has been located at 103 E Main Street in Homer, MI since the 1930's and is a cornerstone of downtown Homer. They were quite busy on a Wednesday afternoon.

The modern rustic interior is illuminated by an assortment of Tiffany style Chandeliers. I counted 18 different lighting fixtures in the dining area. Each has its own size, shape, and design which gives the restaurant an elegant, eclectic, and easy-going feel.

Cascarelli's is famous around here for their pizza and they did not disappoint. The ingredients were plentiful and we didn't order extra cheese, but got it.

The bar at Cascarelli's has 20 beers on tap. Each has a unique tapper that is drawn at the bar. There are more than 30 additional tappers on display that can be rotated into the bar as needed.
Cascarelli's in Homer is a great place to go for a fun time and great pizza in Southern Michigan.

Drowsy Chaperone LIVE at Sauk Theater Jonesville

'The Drowsy Chaperone' is live on stage at the Sauk Theater in Jonesville. It is the best musical play-I've-never-heard-of before. It is the story of a guy who is reminiscing about an old Broadway play while listening to its vinyl recording on a record player in his apartment. The play comes to life as he does commentary on the intricacies of the musical from his perspective.
The characters include a smiling groom, an ex-actress bride, a gangster, a Latin lover, a butler, a wannabe actress, and of course, a drowsy chaperone. Some characters want the couple to get married and some of them don't. There are sub-plots and schemes that make this a very interesting, comical, and amusing story. The live orchestra in the pit makes the soundtrack of this musical seem like a recording.
I had never heard of 'The Drowsy Chaperone' and am not familiar with any of its tunes, so I didn't know what to expect. I went with a group of friends. We enjoyed the acting and singing performances of the local talent, and I laughed until tears rolled down my cheeks during much of the play. There is a scene with tap dancers, a blind-folded roller skater, an intentional big mistake, an intentional little mistake, and an airplane actually lands on stage.

A traditional 'meet and greet' occurs after every show at the Sauk Theater. Dozens of patrons waited outside to compliment and mingle with the actors, director, and crew. This was absolutely the best show-I've-never-heard-of and is now near the top of my all-time favorites list. 'The Drowsy Chaperone' plays through August 28 at the Sauk Theater in Jonesville. It was the best $10 I've spent in a long time.

Best Home Made Tacos

We had the best home-made tacos for lunch. We roasted shrimp, corn, and Vidalia onions with cilantro and mint. We added shredded cheese, baby spinach, and halved grape tomatoes. We served it with guacamole and sour cream on warm soft shelled tortillas. The flavors mixed extremely well with the corn and shrimp complementing the sour cream and guacamole to create a wonderful and unique taste sensation. We will be enjoying this combination often.

Garage Sale Rummage Sale Yard Sale

The annual highway 12 garage sale is halfway finished. Thursday and Friday brought a noticeable increase in traffic through Southern Michigan along US-12. Saturday and Sunday should bring even more shoppers looking for treasures along the route of Michigan's longest garage sale. The Eastern trail head begins near the Detroit River shore and runs almost 200 miles. The Western trail head is in New Buffalo near the shore of Lake Michigan.

Jonesville is very near the mid-point of highway 12 in South Central Michigan.  Many residents of Jonesville are participating this year. Some are fortunate to live right on US-12 while others are a few blocks off the main drag with signs pointing towards their sale. The village has opened up the park in downtown Jonesville for folks who live in an inconvenient location but still want to participate in this popular event. Jonesville is a great place to take a break during a full day of garage sales. There are a dozen restaurants in town featuring everything from fast food to ethnic cuisine to family and fine dining plus ice cream.

Whether folks decide to hold a garage sale, yard sale, rummage sale, or porch sale, there is a big variety of stuff to browse from antiques and collecibles to toys and clothes to artwork and treasures. If you don't make it this year, the sale is traditionally held during the 2nd weekend in August.

Heritage Lane Jonesville MI

I had an opportunity to go inside the old Kiddie Toy and Brush facility in downtown Jonesville Michigan, so I took advantage of it. The upper floors of this factory have not been used since the 1960's. The space offers ceilings about 10 feet tall on 4 floors, and large windows on three sides with huge wood beams and thick brick walls. My untrained eye says it's in great shape for a building that hasn't been used in decades.

A developer has come to town and has attained approval from Jonesville's planning commission and village council to begin turning the eyesore into a modern apartment building for seniors and small middle class families. Federal monies must now be obtained to begin the project. The plan calls for the demolition of all the one story additions and leaving just the original four story building. A parking lot surrounded by significant green space will be incorporated on the site. If all of the state and federal approvals fall into place, the project will begin in the Spring of 2012.

In 9-12 months, a building with 46 apartments will be completed. All of the apartments will have either 1 or 2 bedrooms. 2 floors will be exclusive to senior citizens while 2 middle level floors will house singles, couples, and small families. The ground floor devoted to seniors is scheduled to also have a library, community room, and kitchen. Minimum income will be required for all residents. Government housing assistance will not be available at this facility.

The Munro House Bed and Breakfast is just a block away and is the most convenient lodging facility for the developers, workers, inspectors, and future visitors to residents of Heritage Lane.

Rakers Trial Gardens in Litchfield

The trial gardens at Rakers Acres in Litchfield Michigan are in full bloom and open to the public through the month of August. Seed companies from across the country grow displays of their products in professional garden settings. Several acres of annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, and ground cover are flanked by rows of potted floral displays and scores of hanging baskets. Most are in the sun, but some are grown in shade to give gardeners inspiration of what their well-cared for product could look like.

Recent mild daytime temperatures have been ideal conditions for walking the gardens and viewing the seemingly endless varieties and colors of flowers. Raker employees and seed representatives are also onsite to provide information on local retail outlets and tips on how to make your garden beautiful. Liquid refreshments to keep visitors hydrated is a pleasant amenity provided onsite.

Many of the visiting gardeners, growers, and representatives have found the Munro House B&B in Jonesville to be a convenient and comfortable headquarters when visiting Rakers Trial Gardens. Located just 5 minutes away in downtown Jonesville, the Munro House has been the people's choice for lodging in the area for years.
Rakers Trial Gardens are open to the public Monday through Friday from 8-5 through the month of August. Rakers Acres is located at 10371 Rainey Road between Jonesville and Litchfield.

Christmas Ornament Gift

Bobbie and Jimmy were visiting family in town and stayed at the Munro House B&B in Jonesville for a full week. They enjoyed our hospitality so much that they left us with a parting gift. Our personal Christmas Tree is decorated with commemorative ornaments and gifts from friends and acquaintances. We now have our first Santa depicted with his companion Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), a wonderful addition from our guests that will be remembered every time we decorate the tree.

Captain America Gets 2 Thumbs Up

I don't read comic books, but I enjoy the super heroes they made popular. I like the moral dilemmas, the personal conflicts, and the timeless theme of good versus evil. Everyone knows the major characters--Superman, Batman, ans Spiderman, but there are a lot of very popular, and not-so-popular super heroes that are reappearing in the movies. I remember Captain America as a Saturday morning cartoon, so the character is familiar.  But I had no idea where he came from, what he was all about, and what was his motivation. We went to the local theater and saw 'Captain America: The First Avenger' in 3-D. It was awesome--not the 3-D, the movie.

The movie takes place around World War II and involves American research to create a super soldier. Bad guys recover antiquities that have incredible energy and attempt to use it take over the world. Yeah, it's a familiar story that is far-fetched, but the story is very well-told and believable. The characters and the story-line invites non-comic book fans into the genre. My buddy, Chad, is huge into comic books, gave me his opinion of the movie. It followed the original story and was a very good movie creation of a comic book character. So there you have it. Captain America gets two thumbs up.

I almost forgot: the movie is not over until after the credits. So, stick around for the very end.

Lodging for NASCAR race fans near MIS

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) features the Pure Michigan 400 on Sunday August 21 in Brooklyn Michigan. Over 100,000 fans are expected for the main race on Sunday, with smaller crowds on Friday for Pole Day and on Saturday for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series running of the VFW 200.

Many fans will arrive for a full week of activities at MIS. Most of them will be staying in their luxury RVs. The rest of the fans will arrive for 3 days, 2 days, or just 1 day of racing action. Many of these fans will be camping, as there is a shortage of hotel/motels within a half hour of the race track.

For those fans who want to avoid the possibility of camping during a heat wave or in rainy weather, the Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville offers rooms for couples who prefer a comfortable bed in a quiet house just 30 minutes West of the track on US-12.  This fine lodging facility is a step up from hotels and motels near MIS. Jonesville also has a dozen restaurants with cuisine ranging from fast food, to family dining, to fine dining. Fuel, ice cream, and a Super Wal-Mart are also in town to take care of your needs.

A great weekend of racing can be very comfortable when your headquarters is in Jonesville.

Highway 12 Garage Sale

Michigan's Longest Garage Sale takes place on the second weekend in August and runs the length of Highway 12 through Southern Michigan. The sale is in effect August 12-14 in 2011. This 200 mile event has participants in cities, small towns, and rural areas between downtown Detroit and New Buffalo.  Antiques, collectibles, and furniture plus produce, jams, and other home-made items may be found along the trail.

Many participating properties will be found at private residences, in fields, at businesses, or in parking lots. Scottish Terrier Gift from Guests

A lot of guests at the Munro House in Jonesville  leave a lasting impression on us or a nice note in the room or a positive review online. The real special guests leave a gift. A couple from Texas knew we collected Scottie Dog figurines and found one at the antique mall that they were sure we didn't have in our collection. They were right, and now we have our mascot depicted on our business card holder. Thanks Lee and Beth!
