Ladies Spa Day

Very often, women want to get away and have a spa day. In Michigan, the Munro House in Jonesville offers spa packages 7 days a week, along with bed and breakfast.  Conveniently located within 90 minutes of Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Battle Creek, and Kalamazoo, the Munro House has several packages that combine meals, lodging, and spa services done in our historic home.

Local professionals provide their talent to perform manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, body wraps, and waxing.  Our most popular packages include the first 4 day spa services.  A couple of girls arranging a spa day is typical, but we have had bridal parties of 14 come here for a getaway. We are able to schedule enough workers so that everyone is continuously occupied for a relaxing day at our spa.  These four services usually take about 4 hours to complete.

The typical package has our guests arrive on a Friday and go out for dinner and retire to their room.  After breakfast on Saturday, the spa services begin for a totally relaxing day.  A fine dining experience completes the day.  After another good night of sleep, another breakfast is served on Sunday before our guests return home, refreshed.

Minister Performs Simple Affordable Wedding in Jonesville Michigan

I had a moment of inspiration and decided to host simple, affordable weddings in Hillsdale County.  I called it the Thousand Dollar Wedding.  The missing piece was an on-call minister to perform the ceremony.  A little research was done and I was ordained a minister of the Universal Life Church which specifically allows me to officiate wedding ceremonies.

The seed was planted and after a few months of patient waiting, I performed my first wedding.  The couple came to stay at my house, the Munro House Bed and Breakfast in downtown Jonesville, Michigan.  They purchased my Spring Getaway Package and added the wedding. They wanted a simple, casual ceremony.  I needed to supply the venue, officiate, and witnesses.
After meeting and talking to the couple, I knew they were made for each other and were getting married for all the right reasons.  We selected the brief wedding ceremony.  I made them breakfast, they each had a massage, and after going out for lunch, they came back to my house to get married.  I enlisted the help of Don & Shirley, my neighbors from across the street, and performed my first wedding in the mid-afternoon in our great old house.
My guests got exactly what they wanted. I got to provide them the service they required. We all had a very good weekend.

The Mr. Mike Diet

I have started my very own diet program that has seen some early results. I started at 218 pounds and have lost 6.8 pounds in 8 days. I have combined a fun exercise routine with consistant eating habits to start me on my goal to be under 200 pounds in 90 days.  At this rate, it will not take long to be under 200 and continue to an optimal weight for me--around 175 pounds on the "Mr. Mike Diet".

The desire started when my wife showed me a Wii video game system that the hosts were using on QVC--one of those shop from home TV channels.  It looked like they were having fun and getting a good workout at the same time.  We made a mistake and just ordered the Wii and some games in time for Christmas--what we needed was the Wii Fit Balance Board.  Unfortunately, by the time we figured that out, everyone was out of stock on this item.  I proceeded to check out the video game section of every store each time I went in to shop for other items.  It wasn't until March 17 that I saw a single Wii Fit Board at my local Wal-Mart. I nabbed it and headed for the checkout lane.  On my way there, 3 people asked me where I had found it.  I was obviously not the only person looking for this hot item and I had the only one.

I have been burning fat for a week while doing the step dance routine, plus hula hoop and boxing.  It gets me sweating and feeling the burn, expecially while doing the hula.  It logs my progress, counts the length of the workout, and graphs my progress.  I have set aside some time each day to workout in our house.  I try to go 30-40 minutes doing these aerobic exercises. There are also fun games, weight training, and yoga.
But, working out isn't enough.  A decent diet has to be part of the program.  Most of the diets I have been on in the past have left me famished after every low calorie meal.  I need to eat real food in decent quantities or my stuffing and snacking habits will return.

I had always noticed on the Seinfeld show that Jerry was a pretty trim guy who ate a lot of cereal.  I like cereal and have chosen my favorites from Kellogg's to stock up in the pantry.  Most days I have Corn Pops or Special K along with some fresh fruit, juice, and water.  It fills me up and keeps me satisfied. However, I do own the Munro House Bed and Breakfast.  What kind of host would I be if I ate cereal while my guests ate my specialties?  When I join my guests for breakfast, I opt for a high protein meal of bacon and eggs.

I shared a flight with Jared the Subway Guy several years ago.  His Subway diet inspired me to add that to the lunch portion of my meal schedule.  I usually have the 6 inch turkey breast sub with lots of safe vegetables and dressing, plus water.  There is a Subway about a half mile from my house, so I get a mile walk going there and back, I eat a filling low fat meal, and I feel good about my choices.

Dinnertime can be tough, but I have been trying to stick to broiled chicken breast with light starches on the side, plus lots of vegetables and more water.  Sometimes, I have to cheat a little bit--especially at restaurants.  I try to stick to seafood menu items that are light on butter and sauces.  It hasn't always worked out, but being conscious of my choices is part of the process.
I always cut a big bowl of fresh fruit for breakfast. What the guests don't eat is all mine.  I use it for snacking the rest of the day.  I have a big tub of fat free strawberry yogurt that I add to a nice portion of berries once or twice a day between meals.  It is delicious, filling, and healthy.

That's it. I exercise, eat well (and healthy), take a nice walk, and watch my progress on my video game system.  Getting started was the hard part.  Charting my progress on the video game system is the motivator.  It's been a few years since I was under 200 pounds.  Now that I'm in my 50's, controlling my weight and taking steps to improve my health will be a good thing. I call it the "Mr. Mike Diet", but it could just as easily be known as the "Seinfeld-Wii-Subway Diet".

Chicago Water Grill Is Gone, But It Will Be Back

A horrible fire in downtown Jonesville, Michigan, burned the Chicago Water Grill and May's Furniture Store in November of 2009.  Both businesses were a total loss and had stood charred and boarded up through the winter months.  In mid-March of 2010 the excavators came in and tore both buildings down. Now, the corner of Chicago and Water streets is empty.  All of the debris is gone and clean fill covers the area that once was home to two fine businesses.
Conversations with Wayne Babcock, owner of the Chicago Water Grill, has us looking forward to a larger restaurant that will occupy the site of both businesses.  There are still some issues that need to be resolved--including insurance, construction, financing, zoning, and the purchase of May's property.  The wheels are in motion to get agreements, proposals, and approvals to make the opening of the new grill a reality in November of 2010.  An addition to the business is the idea for outdoor seating along with a banquet room for private parties and live entertainment to complement the larger restaurant.

The Chicago Water Grill was definitely the cornerstone of downtown Jonesville.  As the owner of the Munro House Bed and Breakfast with a consistant flow of visitors from across the country and around the world, a great restaurant within 2 blocks had been a huge asset for virtually all of our guests.  Rebuilding the grill will be a welcome addition to Jonesville and all of Hillsdale County.

Spring Break in Michigan

Now that winter is over, people are antsy for a getaway.  Some want to go South to Florida or West to Arizona.  Some want beach, some want heat.  Everyone wants a change of scenery.  But not everyone has the time. That's when a getaway to Jonesville, Michigan, may fit perfectly.

When time is the biggest obstacle, a getaway location within 2 hours of home is a very good option. There may not be beach or heat, but there is a change of scenery and a relaxed pace nearby.  Family owned restaurants dominate the area and onsite spa professionals are available most every day.
Jonesville is located in South Central Michigan near Jackson.  The central location is within 2 hours of Detroit, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Toledo, South Bend, and Fort Wayne.  Choosing Jonesville means that most of the getaway will be spent relaxing and less of the getway will be spent driving. Folks with just a couple of days or a weekend will find Jonesville a convenient location for their short trip.

The Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville, Michigan, is a leader in innovative getaway packages in the Michigan B&B industry.  Most packages include dinners and massages, along with 2 nights bed and breakfast.  Flowers, chocolates, movie tickets, and other spa services can be added to create a unique package for any occassion.
The staff consistantly gets high marks for the quality of the service.  Some of that is due to the amount of time that is spent on the table receiving the service.  At the Munro House, a one hour massage means one hour of massage on the table.  At most salons, an hour of massage means 5 minutes of consultation, 5 minutes to disrobe, 45 minutes on the table, and 5 minutes to get dressed.  That's right, at many spas, a one hour massage lasts just 45 minutes.  At the Munro House, one hour of massage means 60 minutes of massage.

Local favorite restaurants take good care of guests from the Munro House.  The food is plentiful and consistanly very good.  The service is friendly and consistantly very good.
Additional items can be added to make the occassion special.  Chocolates, roses, and movie tickets can be added for romance.  Manicures, pedicures, facials, or body wraps can be added for relaxation.
